Procedure

Hair transplantation began as a simple procedure where circles of skin or “plugs” from the back of the scalp were excised as single arbitrary units and implanted on the bald skin at the crown and hairline. This overly simplistic approach led to unsatisfactory cosmetic results that were clearly evident when considering the entire hairline was composed of connecting circles. Additionally, scarring on the back of the scalp could become very noticeable. This old method was abandoned in the early 1990s.

Procedures have improved to a new standard where great care and planning by the staff ensure a natural-looking result, minimal scarring, and more hair transplanted in a single session. There are currently two different methods that are able to achieve this, FUT and FUE.

Dr. Michael Shehata harvesting grafts from the donor area.

In FUT hair transplantation, a thin strip of hair-bearing skin is removed from the back of the scalp and generally transplanted to areas on top of the scalp. After the strip is removed, it is given to a team of technicians that dissect it into a number of smaller skin grafts. While the grafts are continuing to be trimmed down, the physician then begins to make a series of microscopic incisions or slits in the recipient area. Once they are completed, individual grafts are then placed into each of those sites. The implanted hair follicles are in a dormant stage of the hair growth cycle for up to three months following the procedure. Once the three months have passed, the implanted hair follicles will begin to grow just like normal hair (a rate of about a 1/2 inch per month). Some hairs may even sprout up as late as eleven months after the procedure.

With FUE hair transplantation, grafts are instead extracted one by one from the donor area. To achieve a sufficient number of grafts and to prevent noticeable density loss, they are taken from a much larger area than FUT. After the grafts are extracted, they are ready to be placed. The placement to the recipient sites is done the same as FUT.

Hair Transplantation FAQs

When will hair growth first be noticeable?

Hair grows gradually, about a ½” every month, so some patients may first notice growth in as little as 3-4 months after the procedure (although expect about one full year for all hairs to have sprouted).

Will there be any scarring noticeable at the donor site?

The surrounding hair around the donor site (the area where the hair is taken from, usually residing on the back of the scalp) covers up the scar(s) left behind from both FUT and FUE Hair Transplantation. Even if someone were to “thumb” through the hair, they would have to have a trained eye and really know what they are looking for.

After the procedure is completed, will it be obvious that it was done?

After the grafts are placed, scabs will eventually appear as the grafts settle into the scalp.  The scabs are most noticeable in the first 10-14 days, but with regular saline soaks to the scalp and avoiding trauma to the scalp (ie. hitting your head on a cupboard), the scabs may come off sooner. After that, there will be a faint, pinkish hue that is left behind in the area (which will fade completely over the coming days).

Should time be taken off from work?

Most people take off about a week, it depends on the job though.

Is it permanent?

It is the ONLY permanent solution to hair loss to date.

Can a graft ever fall out?

If there is trauma caused to the scalp, such as banging your head on something within a few days after the procedure or heavy lifting, then yes it can happen. Prior to the procedure, patients are extensively educated on how to properly preserve the graft, and if it does happen to fall out, it is rather easy to reinsert into the scalp.
