Hair transplantation began as a simple procedure where circles of skin or “plugs” from the back of the scalp were excised as single arbitrary units and implanted on the bald skin at the crown and hairline. This overly simplistic approach led to unsatisfactory cosmetic results that were clearly evident when considering the entire hairline was composed of connecting circles. Additionally, scarring on the back of the scalp could become very noticeable. This old method was abandoned in the early 1990s.

Procedures since have improved to a new standard where great care and planning by the staff ensure a natural-looking result, minimal scarring, and more hair transplanted in a single session. There are currently two different methods that are able to achieve this, FUT and FUE.

Dr. Michael Shehata removing grafts from the donor area.

In FUT hair transplantation, a thin strip of hair-bearing skin is removed from the back of the scalp and generally transplanted to areas on top of the scalp. After the strip is removed, it is given to a team of technicians that dissect it into a number of smaller skin grafts. While the grafts are continuing to be trimmed down, the physician then begins to make a series of microscopic incisions or slits in the recipient area. Once they are completed, single grafts are then placed into each of those sites. The implanted hair follicles are in a dormant stage of the hair growth cycle for up to three months following the procedure. Once the three months have passed, the implanted hair follicles will begin to grow just like normal hair (a rate of about a 1/2 inch per month). Some hairs may even sprout up as late as nine months after the procedure.

With FUE hair transplantation, grafts are instead extracted one by one from the donor area. To achieve a sufficient number of grafts and to prevent noticeable density loss, they are taken from a much larger area than FUT. After the grafts are extracted, they are ready to be placed. The placement to the recipient sites is done the same as FUT.
