Does it hurt? What does it feel like?
Majority of patients compare the laser to a rubber band being snapped against the skin.
For others, it can best be described as a hot, stinging sensation. Patients will
experience different experiences based on their pain tolerance. During treatment we
keep our patients as comfortable as possible by using an ice pack on the treated area
and the Zimmer cooling machine. The Zimmer cooling machine is widely regarded as
the best skin numbing solution for tattoo removal. This noninvasive machine blows
freezing cold air at the skin before, during, and after treatment – providing maximum
comfort throughout your entire treatment.
How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments depends on a variety of factors, including the quality of ink
used, the chemical composition, the age and location of the tattoo, patient health, and
much more. Patients will almost always require multiple treatments to completely
remove their tattoo. Our Astanza Trinity laser is designed to penetrate deeper into the
skin and shatter more ink within each session, speeding up the fading process and
reducing the number of overall treatments needed.
How is the tattoo removed?
Laser pulverizes the ink then the immune system slowly carries it away the broken
down ink.
Are certain colors harder to treat?
Yes. Blues, greens, pastels, and teals are considered stubborn tattoos and require a
specific laser wavelength to effectively remove these colors. Neiman Dermatology has
invested in the Astanza Trinity laser to tackle and remove tattoos of all colors, including
resistant green and blue inks.
Are there any preparations necessary before treatment?
Patients are advised to limit their sun exposure, not use tanning booths, self tanning
products, or any medications that cause light sensitivity. This rule should also be
followed after each treatment. Excessive sun exposure can cause unwanted side
effects like skin discoloration. Protect your skin by applying sunscreen daily and wearing
appropriate clothing to protect your tattoo.
How will the area look after treatment?
Immediately after treatment, the laser will cause a frosting effect. Some patients are
worried at the appearance of laser frosting, however, we ensure you that this is actually
a good sign. White frosting indicates that the laser is penetrating the ink efficiently. As
your ink fades more with each treatment, the laser frosting will appear less.
Are there any side effects?
The most common side effects are redness, swelling, blistering (superficial), bruising,
scabbing, itchiness, and slight stinging similar to a sunburn. All of these side effects are
temporary and will heal over the weeks following a treatment. As long as you follow
treatment protocol and proper aftercare, side effects should stay limited to these.
How much does laser tattoo removal cost?
Neiman Dermatology offers per treatment pricing on tattoos based on the size of the
area being treated.
How far apart are treatments?
Treatments are typically spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart. This waiting period is necessary to
give your skin time to heal before its next laser session.
Are older tattoos harder to remove?
Not at all. Older tattoos often easier to treat, depending on how dense the ink is. Tattoos
fade more and more the older they are, making them fairly easy to remove. Our clinic
uses a variety of factors to assess your tattoo and best determine the number of
treatments it will need.
Can I go out into the sun?
In the first few months, exposure to the sun can cause pigment changes. It is highly
recommended that the area treated has a physical sun block, whether it be with a
bandage or an article of clothing. After two months you will be able to go in the sun.
