I Had a Skin Cancer Examination and I Was Thoroughly Impressed

By John Sciria, Patient Care Coordinator at Lisa S. Ball, NP at the Neiman Dermatology Building

Working in dermatology for over 10 years, I know the significance of an annual skin cancer examination. But recently, I had my first at our office with Nurse Practitioner Lisa Ball (PhD, FNP-BC). Prior to that, I would usually just get a specific mole checked out, never a full-body exam. And I have to say, I don’t know why I waited so long.

The visit began with Lisa’s assistant Vicki gathering my medical history. From there, she then asked my reason for coming in. I explained to her that after a recent visit with my primary doctor he recommended that I get my moles checked out. After finishing with my history, Vicki then gave me a medical exam gown to get changed into and left the room.

A couple of minutes later, Lisa came in and began her examination. It was really interesting to observe firsthand as she used a dermatoscope (a handheld device used to check skin lesions) from head to toe. Throughout the assessment, she really paid close attention to hard-to-see areas such as the scalp and the back. Marked out suspicious spots, took pictures of them (for future reference), and even took a biopsy of a lesion on the back of my leg. To say she was thorough would be an understatement. Thirty minutes was allocated for my appointment, and she used every minute.

One thing I want to mention is just how good of a job Lisa did in making me feel comfortable and at ease (because let me tell you, standing in front of your boss in your underwear can be just a tad intimidating). But in all seriousness, this is something I hear all the time from her patients and it shows how great of a provider she truly is.

If you too would like to schedule an appointment will Lisa, or any of our other providers, contact our office today. Remember, when it comes to skin cancer, the best prevention is early detection!

Getting to the Root of Poison Ivy

If you have ever gardened, hiked, or camped, odds are you crossed paths with poison ivy. And it probably wasn’t the most pleasant experience either, as it can severely irritate the skin. So, we figured to answer some common questions we get about the notorious plant so you are better equipped the next time you come in contact with it.poison ivy skin care

What is poison ivy?

Poison ivy is a member of the Toxicodendron plant family. It can grow as either a shrub or a climbing vine. Most show the three-leaflet formation typical of a Toxicodendron, although this can vary.

What causes the skin reaction?

Surprisingly, the plant itself does not cause irritation. It’s actually the allergenic oil it contains (urushiol) that does. Depending on the individual’s sensitivity and degree of exposure, the reaction can range anywhere from mild itching and redness to severe discomfort and blistering in the affected areas.

When will symptoms show?

Most people develop symptoms within 24-48 hours after exposure.

Does everyone experience a reaction?

Interestingly enough, not everyone will have a reaction to poison ivy. About 15% of people are actually not allergic to urushiol.

What to do if you believe you may have come in contact with it?

If you suspect you may have come in contact with poison ivy, wash your skin right away using lukewarm, soapy water. The sooner you can wash it, the better. Also, make sure to wash any clothing and/or footwear that may have come in contact. And if you were out with your dog, rinse them (and their leash) off, as the oil can actually stick to their fur. It’s important to note, that when handling anything that may have come in contact with poison ivy, the oils can spread to your skin. So, always make sure to wear gloves.

What to do if you develop a rash or blisters?

As with any rash, avoid touching it. This can worsen it and cause an infection. If you have any blisters, also leave them alone. Popping it can leave the exposed skin vulnerable to infection.

How can discomfort be eased or treated?

One of the best ways to soothe your skin is with short, lukewarm baths. Adding colloidal oatmeal to it will help with the itching. For further itching relief, try using a calamine or hydrocortisone cream/lotion. And then finally, if needed, an antihistamine. Just make sure not to apply an antihistamine topically, as it can worsen the rash and itch.

If you believe you may have come in contact with poison ivy, contact our office right away. Early treatment is crucial in treating the associated skin conditions.

Fourth of July Summer Skin Care

The Fourth of July is a great time to honor our country, and also an ideal opportunity to spend some time outdoors. Whether in a backyard at a barbecue, park for a picnic, or poolside at a party, a lot of people will be outside for festivities. That means more exposure to the sun. And as we know, even if it’s not sunny out, harmful UVA and UVB rays can still prevalent. So, here are a few tips that will help keep your skin protected:

Women US Flag
  • When applying sunscreens, layering does not provide added SPF protection. That means that the SPF you end up with is only the strength of the highest one applied. For example, if you apply a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 then apply one with an SPF of 25, you will have the protection of the SPF of 30.
  • Despite that, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) still recommends applying two layers of sunscreen on all exposed areas. The second layer should be applied about 30 minutes after the first and at least 30 minutes before any sun exposure.
  • Reapply sunscreen periodically throughout the day. This is something not a lot of people do or are aware of, but it’s very important. It’s advised to reapply sunscreen roughly about every two hours or after you have been exposed to water.
  • SPF protection is on a logarithmic scale. This means there is a bigger difference between SPF 25 and SPF 30 than there is with SPF 30 and SPF 45.
  • SPF’s below 15 are essentially worthless. They simply do not provide the skin with enough protection from the sun. We recommend an SPF of at least 30 to all of our patients.
  • Don’t forget your lips. The sun’s rays can dry delicate lip tissue. Keep your lips hydrated by using a lip balm with an SPF.
  • After a long day out in the sun take a cold shower. It can decrease acne breakouts and help to better hydrate the skin.
  • If you do contract sunburn take Advil or Motrin. This will help to block the inflammation that can occur, and actually lessen the burn itself.

Remember these tips to keep your skin safe this holiday weekend and beyond!

Hollywood’s Secret to Great Hair

A lot of female celebrities are known for thick, luscious hair, but what’s their secret? We looked into it and found out that it’s most likely attributed to hair growth supplement Viviscal.Woman hair

From Jennifer Aniston to Reese Witherspoon, a number of different celebrities use Viviscal. Gwyneth Paltrow even told Vogue that she believes in the product so much, that she wants to buy stock in the company. Aside from helping hair to grow thicker and faster, it can also help heat-damaged hair. That’s country singer Miranda Lambert’s main reason for using the product. She told Us Weekly, “Because my hair gets styled so often, I need to protect it. Viviscal vitamins help.”

Some of the ingredients of Viviscal include Biotin, Vitamin C, and Aminomar Marine Complex. The AminoMar is derived from marine protein molecules and is proven to nourish thin hair from within. This leads to stronger, healthier, and more vibrant-looking hair. Results can be seen in as little as three months after use, and at least six months to know if it is working for you.

And if you still need convincing about the product, model Molly Sims has this to say, ‘When my hair looks good, I feel good. Viviscal saved my hair and made me love it again.”

So, if you’re struggling with your hair, Viviscal may be for you! Contact our office to order it today.
